I don't know if mine is early or late; I don't think they changed the design in any case. It was however cleaned and rebuilt by Balham Optics a decade or so ago; I've forgotten exactly when. I've had it maybe 25 years.
It's a surprisingly sharp lens at f/5.6 to f/11 but f/16 is not as good and f/22 is unbelievably soft. In the other direction it's very soft and flary at f/1.2 but it's rather a nice effect. Sharpens up a lot even by f/1.4 and pretty good at f/2 to f/4 -- certainly not soft enough to make you go "Oh, God, that's soft!"
