If the doc removed the growing part of the nail (the matrix), there is a very good chance that the nail will not grow back.

If it was really a "temporary" toenail extraction, then most do not grow back normally. Most grow back somewhat thicker and some deformed.

Sorry to sound so negative, but this should have been explained to you by the original doc at the time.
