We are grateful to Ian Ward, of Blue Associates, for outlining the steps needed to set-up ("configure") any Windows-based PC to be able to 'read' Japanese character fonts [Kanji, Hiragana & Katakana].
If you "configure" your PC for Kanji & Kana, it means that you will be able to receive & 'read' original documents & create your own documents/e-mails containing Japanese characters ... rather than being limited to receiving only PDF versions [which you cannot modify]
Here are Ian's instructions for "configuring" PC's running Windows XP:

1 Go to Control Panel
2 Select 'Regional and Language Options'
3 On 'Languages' tab, under 'Supplemental language support', select 'Install files for East Asian Langages'
4 Tick box and click 'Apply'
5 Your computer needs to be re-booted and then it will read Japanese kanji and kana.
Your computer 'Help' facility should give the answer by simply typing in 'Japanese' and selecting the appropriate option.
The process can readily be reversed by unticking the box and re-booting.
