"Hallowed Be Thy Name"
The first of the three petitions that carry us up to God, “hallowed be thy name,” is a direct command to keep holy the name of the Lord. All people should recognize God’s holiness, and through this petition we ask that all people come to this realization. This petition is not only about remembering to acknowledge how great God is, but also to praise him for nothing more than being God, the divine creator who formed us out of nothing. God gave us his only begotten Son to take the form of man and to die for our sins so that we may have life eternal. God only desires the very best for us; this God is the God that we praise and keep holy His name.

This petition combats the deadly sin of vainglory, which is the desire to be praised by man. This is the idea that we are God and that our praise should be directed towards us. This is not how we should live as Christians; Jesus calls us to be servants and not masters. All praise should go to God. So not only do we praise God’s name with this line, but also we are reminded that we are called to be his humble servants. All of our actions should not be done for our own self-glory or for the recognition of our fellow man, but for the greater glory of God.
