"Our Father Who Art in Heaven"
The first thing we must note about the Our Father is that in this prayer Jesus is allowing us to call God Father. This gives us a whole new relationship with God, allowing us to draw even closer to him. When we also address God as Father we leave behind any individualism that we can have; we are called to love others as our Father loves us.

Not only is God our Father, but in this prayer, there is also an acknowledgment that there is a God is in heaven. This simple notion that there is a God in heaven gives us confidence and hope in the power of God. This petition reminds us that there is a God in heaven who is all powerful, and that we should have trust in his infinite power, love, and mercy. This is important to remember in tough times when we do not feel that there is a God who cares for us, or we think that our fate is fixed, because with God anything is possible.

The confidence that can come when we remember this petition can motivate anyone to start doing the will of God, because He is in heaven wanting us to join us forever. When we pray the Our Father and we start with this petition, we are denouncing the deadly sin of sloth. The notion that God is in heaven watching over us and has this great desire to draw us closer to him can help us not be lazy in our spiritual life. If we want to be with God then we will do anything to attain that relationship.
