Hi,

Thanks for your great book on making documentaries; I found it very helpful - so thank you!

For my second film project, I plan on producing a biographical film about a spiritual leader that passed away around 20 years ago. Unfortunately, there's only a limited amount of video footage with him (there are still photos though). My goal is to produce a film that highlights his traits that the audience can learn from and emulate ( ex. having an unwavering commitment to the truth, being there for your fellow man, being a trailblazer, and many others).

In your book, you differentiated between primarily using visual evidence as opposed to fillers. I think there are some really great interviews to be shot but given that the subject is no longer alive and there is limited footage, what other types or creative ways are there to show true visual evidence? Or in this situation, if interviewing his student or contemporaries is compelling and emotional, could that constitute as the film's primary visual evidence? (Due to budget constraints, I can't do dramatization, reenactment, or dramatizations either.)

Are there any other films that you can think of that did a great job in a similar situation that I could use as a reference point for a good methodology?

Thanks!
