Power steering unit on D15 II (about 1962) failed. Have been trying to get a new unit built. A local shop found a machine shop but unit they sent was not the same configeration as orginal and could not mount on the tractor. They insisted they had the right unit but did refund my payment.
Now working with another shop and they can build a new shaft but are looking for seals and bearings. I know this is a "rare/old" tractor but it would seem that the salvage yards would run out of reliable PS units and some where some one is building or rehabing Allis Chalmers power steering units.
Cost is important but the unit that did not fit was $900 and the expected cost for the new shaft is $650 plus seals and bearings if they can find replacements. A salvage yard unit was $650 plus shipping (they wanted to sell the complete steering parts of the tractor so that was going to cost a 500 to 600 mile round trip).
The D15 II has a loader and great tractor BUT reallly need a dependable steering unit so need some sources willing to build and deliver a dependable unit in the high hundreds. Open to ideas. |
