On Radio 4 `Today' programme, it was suggested to Lord Sainsbury that he had given New Labour £11.5 million pounds, he did not deny this new figure. Sainsbury's sells GM crops, his connection is undeniable, and as Science Minister he is supposed to be neutral. A Science Minister post is normally reserved for someone the public had a chance to vote for or an expert qualified scientist.
Richmond Gasworks was contaminated land and for this reason the money paid to British Gas had to include the decontamination costs assessed by Jenny Tonge MP as £6½ million. This was British Gas's major reason for not selling the land to the Ice Rink rebuild project.
Behind tall walls the `decontamination' might or might not have occurred, if it hasn't, is it a good place for a food store? The hundreds of lorries required to remove the top 3 metres did not enter or leave the site. Was it decontaminated by a new process pioneered by The Minister for Science? I doubt if we'll ever know.
