 Subject: male vs female

I have three children, my oldest is 11 and has autism, they would like a GSD- I would too. Is there any difference between male vs female. I would not be breeding so I would want to spay or neuter. I am worried about aggression toward neighboring pets- particularly with a male. I have had a GSD as a child but it was so long ago.
