The WCA Board (and its delegated committees) have a fiduciary responsibility to use the entrusted funds appropriately. In order to assist this effort, I have several observations to consider:
.I consider the inclusion of the Exterior signage in the program inappropriate use of the homeowners' money. In my opinion it does not add to the value of the property and, in view of the reasonably good present signage, I do not think it is necessary.
.The present Watergate logo is a brand, a trademark. It is a nautical sign, in the ship flag alphabet it is the letter "W". Very appropriate for Watergate, bright and already well recognized in the Emeryville community. Why change it? Again, it is in my opinion waste of the owners' money. This comment came from many people during various presentations but it seems to fall on deaf ears. (This aside from the observation of many that the proposed logo is ridiculous and totally unreadable).
.The total deletion of the ships theme in the lobbies and its replacement by expensive collage of mirrors is in my opinion another mistake and waste. Again, I recall that in previous presentations most people spoke for rather than against keeping the ships theme. This does not mean that the present photographs have to be expensively restored or kept as they are. They can be scanned and used in a modern way. There were some interesting ideas previously presented, such as etching the images on glass etc. Blue Print service in San Francisco (and others) is capable of suggesting many different ways to reproduce these images on various materials.
.Selection of only one of the two color schemes for the hallways was proposed. Keeping both schemes, which I believe to be cost neutral, would add some variety to our interiors, help the way finding and probably make more people happy. Otherwise we may have the battle of the Brown vs. Blue coming.
.Finally, I believe that a higher base board in the hallways would significantly enhance the visual impact. It may cost more than the proposed small baseboard but my proposal is to offset the cost by substituting the chalidi (?spelling?) tile with less expensive material and deleting it completely outside the lobby doors.
