Actually several DC-3s were fitted with a curde hydraulic autopilot system. Our Super DC-3 came with a 'more modern' electrical controlled Autopilot installed in the 4 Supers build for the navy with airstair doors.

www.TransNorthern.com - Operates Super DC-3 is both Passenger and All Cargo Configuration.

The NY times of sunday 23 may printed a letter from robert mogenthau, former district attorney of New York City regarding pilot complacency in the cockpit. He stated that during the 2nd world war he was the sole passenger on a Navy DC3 flying over the Amazon jungle when the pilot of the flight left the cockpit to play cards with him. After a while the aircraft fuel tanks ran dry and the engines quit. The pilot bolted to the cockpit to find that the auto pilot had disconnected, the copilot was sound asleep. He switched fuel tanks, restarted the engines and saved the day. To the best of my memory the DC3 never had an autopilot. Please confirm.
