Is this the new or older version of the Big Boy?
The older one has the motor sticking out the rear of the cab. What the problem you are describing sounds to be might be the drive shaft in the upper boiler or the speed reduction shaft which is vertical you can see it coming down through the boiler to between the second and third driver.
