This is a common discovery in brownstones by new brownstone owners, many times the previous owners will close off any non-working or damaged chimneys rather than repair them. If you would like to see that fireplace working again you will mostly likely need a full top to bottom inspection to see if the fireplace is in working condition and in code compliant order.
