It all sounds gruesome when it's being explained but the fact is that "sawing down" a bone growth is equal to using a nail file to do your nails. The bone grew too large to fit properly and the only way to "straighten" the toe out is to saw off the excess in order to fit in again. Period.

Ever see birthing live?

It's not painful at all. They knock you out and within two hours you're on your way home. You also get this new contraption that you slide over your leg to take a bath.
It nearly cuts of your blood supply if you pull it too high on the leg but it's great to know you won't stink for two weeks.

My own extensive research before "jumping in" since I am a lifelong "if it don't hurt, don't fix it" type - is that
it is actually a simple procedure and discussing it with a dozen other sr. citizens in my building - they are
as normal as can be at everything they do. Two, in their 80's do ballroom dancing. BETTER than before surgery. No regrets even in those who feel that their sometimes "not so good looking after surgery fixed tootsies" should look like a shoe model. Nothing is ever the same again but it sure beats painful rubbing to bleeding and constantly buying Dr.Scholl's aids. Taking a shoe off to put it back on, etc.

I ran into 2 ladies who got a "bum" surgery. One showed me her smallest toe that now goes in an opposite direction but she also said it was going to be operated on again since "it was a nature thing that it twisted" though it does not affect her physical being. I am quoting her eh? Hammer toes are mostly in the genes.

The way things are going I can envision that in the near future couples will do a TOTAL genetic research on each other prior to marriage. "Lemme examine your feet Joe.., your teeth..."

You actually have no choice if you are in pain. The alternate is you will - like me - eventually find yourself constantly irritated from shoe pressure that makes matters worse. Dr. Scholl's can only do "so much".

Plan a few days with some good DVD movies; invite friends over for a pizza take out and choose a well recommeded Podiatrist and don't forget to check your insurance. I was
told the cost for one tootsie averages $300/350.00 here in Chicago. The dos who did mine comes to the building for follow up care. I don't know is that's "usual" but check it out.

Happy prancing.....
