***********************************************************Major risks involved in removing a small bone spur from a toe are statistically negligible. That being said, there is nothing that is without potential risk and, in general, evaluation of the risks attendant in any form of foot surgery need take into consideration the appropriateness of the patient as far as his/her general health, medical history and especially circulation is concerned. The surgeon should fully evaluate the patient prior to surgery for conditions and situations which might increase risk, and then make an assessment by a risk/benefit analysis. In my experience, blood clots which might present serious problems are very unlikely in this type of procedure. You did allude to a possible history of gout, and surgery has been known to precipitate an acute attack in some patients. But, though I cannot speak to your specific case and sitiuation, generally, should that occur, it can be most often well controlled with appropriate intervention.
