This is a potentially harmful situation which you have inflicted upon yourself, and I would caution others with medication in the house which had been prescribed for others to think twice before taking such without the supervision of a qualified doctor.

The FDA's categorization of a medication as "Prescription Only" is not because it wishs to give income support to doctors. It is because there is evidence of the potential for serious problems or lack of evidence of the safety of that medication when used by the lay public without medical supervision.

It so happens that, though certainly untoward reactions with Diflucan (fluconazole) do not routinely occur, side effects have included serious injury to the liver, anaphylaxis, exfoliative skin disorder, as well as and EKG changes, CNS problems, such as dizziness and seizures, blood and lymphatic disorders, elevations of blood cholesterol and triglycerides, decrease in serum potassium, stomach pain, vomiting and changes in the ability to taste. In addition, there may be undesirable reactions with other medications including:
Oral anti-diabetics, Coumarin-type anticoagulants, Dilantin, Cyclosporine, Rifampin, Theophylline, Seldane, Propulsid, Astemizole, Rifabutin, Tacrolimus and short-acting benzodiazepines, such as Xanax, Serax and Halcion.

Cautions such as this are by no means unusual for "prescription Only" medications, and the prescriber must take these factors into consideration, and to be knowledgeable as to which drug combinations may be harmful, thus being able to detect any such reactions or other untoward effects early, so that appropriate actions, sometimes life-saving, can be taken.

If a patient wants to take this sort of chances on his own, ostensibly to save a few bucks, other than the fact that it is generally illegal to use "Prescription Only" medications which have not been prescribed for a particular patient, then I suppose that's his/her business . . at his/her risk.

Now about the Diflucan and why it may have worked . . .Diflucan IS a potent antifungal, but its spectrum is mainly against a type of yeast know as Candida. This is a common source of vaginitis in the female and probably the main use of Diflucan is in treating that condition. On occasion, Candida infects the foot, but fungus of the foot is generally caused by dermatophyte funguses such as T. Rubrum. So perhaps you were lucky, both in your picking of the correct anti-fungal and hopefully your avoiding potentially severe problems which should have been watched for by a qualified prescriber, But posting such suggestions as you have done herein could possibly subject another to the harms which you have fortunately avoided. It just ain't worth it, folks.
