I recently visited an orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in foot surgery. I have bunions which leave my big toes inwardly angled at about 30-35 degrees. While there isn't much pain involved I am severely restricted to the types of shoes I can wear (basically wear one pair for all occasions).

In conversation with the surgeon he suggested that sooner or later I might want to have surgery - and he talked of fusing bones. While there is no immediate course of action underway, I wish I had asked him about the longer term ramifications of fusing bones in the foot. Will my feet tolerate less, more? Be less flexible, etc.?

I am male, 53y/o, quite active and in reasonably good health.

Thanks in advance.
