I believe that some members of the 508th were exposed to radiation from atmospheric nuclear tests that the US Army was conducting during the period that your father was in the 508th. If your father was ordered to participate in the tests (entire battalions were exposed), his stage 4 lung cancer may be attributed to those tests. Those tests were conducted not at Fort Benning, Georgia, but in one of the Southwestern states. Read the history of the 508th on this website, determine when the 508th participated in those tests, which member units participated, and whether your father was in any of those
