Hello!
It sounds like you may have a similar issue to my earlier response on the forum. You may have:
1) sprained the intermetatarsal ligaments between the metatarsal heads- should be tender between the heads ie ends of the metatarsals
2) sprained the joint capsule connecting the metatarsal to the first bone in your toe, the first phalanx, causing a capsulitis (inflammation of the joint capsule) - should be tender directly on the joint
3) intrinsic muscle strain- the intrinsics are between the shafts of the metatarsals - should be tender between the metatarsals
3) possible stress fracture of the metatarsal bone - should be tender directly on top of the metatarsal bone.

The jumping and releve positions with ballet places a lot of weight bearing stress on the balls of your foot. If you dance professionally, then I would advise an immediate Xray. If you can rest it and the problem persists after 6 weeks then you may need an Xray at that time. In the meantime, avoid pain during all activity, avoid high heels, avoid barefoot walking, keep your athletic shoes on in the house to protect the ball of your foot, and ice and/or ibuprofen as needed.

Hope that helps.
