Corns on toes are the result of inordinate recurring pressure on bony prominences from the toe box of the shoe (dorsal corns), the walking surface or the sole of the shoe (distal corns) or the the adjacent toe (soft corns). When health and circulation considerations do not preclude, some sort of surgical procedure (sometimes soft tissue, but more often bony) is generally best for permanent resolution. But other forms of palliation, such as padding, proper shoe selection and temporary trimming of the corn can be symptomatically effective. The use of caustics and acids to remove the corn, especially when self-administered offer potential problems and I rarely recommend them other than professionally applied and supervised. Emollients alone are never sufficient for resolution of true corns. |
