Something about some of your comments . . specifically, that the other toes are starting to turn in a valgus direction, and that you have what feels like knots near the ball of the foot, makes me think rheumatoid arthritis. Of course, that condition cannot be diagnosed simply from a couple of impression gathered in an Internet post, and I would have to think that, assuming you had gone to a competent doctor, such would have been easily picked up or at least considered.

I have no idea about what the doctor suggestion of "clipping" is all about, and I'm not going to comment or speculate on what I believe might be a mis-characterization on your part of what he said.

But clearly, a valgus deviation of the great toe is commonly associated with and is general part and parcel of what is commonly termed a bunion deformity, so if the great toe is starting to overlap the second, the bunion correction is now obviously not okay.

The essence of your questions cannot be appropriately responded to without a hands-on examination, and I caution you that if anyone gives you a definitive answer without such an examination to take it with a grain of salt. That being said, even a broken clock is right twice a day, so even random and unfounded guesses occasionally hit the mark by blind luck. However, if you are neither blind nor exceedingly lucky, best do your homework in finding a good doctor and place yourself in good hands-on hands.
