I actually think the main thing you need to do is spend time to source the best outlet for you to purchase these shoes from! Cannot help you specifically as i am in Australia! - however i would try calling up a podiatrist in a town/port near you and asking them where they would reccommend you go to be well fitted for trainers. There are a multitude of brands and styles out there and you are right it is a minefield of different products/ideas/advertising hype.

In Australia there are sports shoe stores that advertise/focus on well trained staff to fit you properly and in recent years stores that are owned and run by podiatrists - they will watch you walking on a treadmill in different styles of shoes to assess what is most appropriate for you.

Sounds like you need a good motion control shoe, but one that works in well with your orthotics so you are not over compensated. The modern motion control shoes are actually so good that these on top of orthotics can actually OVERDO it- so best it is seen by a podiatrist if possible. A lot of the modern trainers also have a LOT of build up/arch support type material built into them - sometimes this is removable and sometimes not - if it is very built up and not removable it may not be appropriate for orthotics.

A reputable shoe store really should allow you to take the shoes to your podiatrist for approval (as long as you dont wear them in the street obviously!) and exchange them if the pod. isn't happy with them. Good luck!!
