I have been taking my father to podiatrists for normal care: nail cutting, calus removal at 2 month intervals. A few years ago we changed to a local podiatrist for convenience because he was located only a few blocks from our home.
I noticed he would cut the big toes on both edges diagonally and inward so as to expose the raw skin under the nail. I pointed out to him that previously he was getting a straight cut, and he said that for his condition he needed diagonal cut. I assumed he should know whats best, but I never felt comfortable with this procedure. (I always cut my nail straight across as I learned in High School Health class)
This past week my father who is 90 years old developed an enlarged toe with the outside of the nail seeming to stop growth, and impeded by the enlarged skin. Also, one inner cuticle edge was encrusted with dried blood.
I have been soaking with epsom salt for last few days.
I'm not sure whether we should go back to this doctor or go to someone else.
