I had bunion surgery on March 1/04 by a podiatrist. It was unbelievably EASY!!!! I was awake during most of the procedure and thanks to the drugs was relaxed and in good spirits. I was out of the surgical suite in less than 2 hours total time. We then stopped by a store to pick up some tylenol so I was up and walking around. I experienced some discomfort later in the day when the foot freezing came out but the tylenol helped. I only experienced pain (minor) for 2 days. I am still off work and expect to be for at least another 5 - 6 weeks. I feel like a fraud having this 'free' holiday. However, I realize that my job (teacher) would be impossible with the standing required all day. I have pins in my foot to stabilize the toe. These do not cause any problems as they are well padded. The biggest hassle is putting the plastic boot on for showering. Oh yes, since it is my right foot, I am not driving and am at everyone's mercy to chauffeur me around. The boot is quite large and I am worried that it might get caught around the gas/brake pedal. I was told to 'drive at my own risk' so have chosen not to do so.
There is nothing to feel anxious about. Talk to others who have had the procedure and find the best doctor. That is what I did and I believe he did a very good job - this is something he specializes in and is good at it.
