Dear A,
I understand your disappointment. Your doctor wants to give you the best chance possible. With IVF, we may see a certain number follicles on ultrasound, and we hope that this correlates with the number of eggs we will retrieve. Then we evaluate if the eggs are mature, sometimes they are not all mature. We then see how many fertilize, average fertilization rate is between 60 and 80%. And finally we monitor the embryos in the laboratory until the day of transfer. Our goal is to get you to a transfer. Because the numbers drop off with each step, we sometimes worry that only 3 follicles may end up with no transfer. This may be contributing to why your doctor recommends pursuing IUI instead this cycle.
Although quantity of eggs is important, quality is critical. At your age, the quality is often still good, even if the quantity is low.
You absolutely should have hope! Please speak with your physician about these concerns. Sometimes stress reduction techniques, yoga, accupuncture, or therapy can also help you deal with these difficult times.
Best Regards,
Keri Greenseid |
