Hello,
My father's name was Roderick (Roger) Francis Murphy and he was an Irish citizen who had emigrated to Canada in the late 1950's. He moved down into New York and was (family legend has it) conscripted and sent to a boot camp in New Jersey, and from there went to Georgia. I have a photograph which he took at around that time of a sign outside an army barracks; the sign reads; "3d Battalion, HQ Company. 508th Airborne Inf." Googling that brought me here.
Dad used to say he had been stationed in Panama during the Missile crisis (single-handedly saving the World in his version) but my mother thinks he was never actually sent to Panama, but that they were on stand by to go.
Bit of a long shot I know, but can anyone add anything to this scant information?
