My Papa Clyde was in the D-Day invasion on June 6th. He was dropped at St Mer Eglais. He hooked up with a another gentleman from his Co and stick. For two days they fought one on one fights and cut communication lines. After two days they were hiding in a files when two Jerries walked up on them. The tried to lay low in the tall grass but was still spotted. Papa's buddy was shot in the back of the head. Papa new he was next, but by God's Grace he was spared. The German soldiers knocked him out and took him to a POW camp in Germany. There he said they didn't get to eat much sometimes dandelion soup, a piece of bread if lucky. The POW's at that camp were used during the Dresden Fire Bombings to pull dead german civilians from cellars. Eventually he and three other jumped some German soldiers and took their weapons while moving to another town. A bus had ran out of fuel, while the bus driver reeled with charcoal the four of them took the bus and escaped with one casualty. They made it all the way to Czech when the met up with other American soldiers. They couldn't get Papa and the other guys out of there and to a hospital for over a week because of the fighting. So Papa and the other to gentleman fought with them until the could get shipped out. They loved their country so much that they fought while sick, injured and malnourished. That is what I call a real soldier and a true Hero. I miss his store since he passed in2009. This is for you Papa Clyde Smith 82nd Airborne 508th A Company
