I am going to cover Video for this week because a number of people have asked me to cover the subject. I will follow the same format as last weeks starting with the top end to the most economic.

The top of the line of Production Cameras run into the hundreds of thousands depending on the lenses and the housings that have to be custom made for each camera. So with this in mind I will start with the next layer down what I would call High End Hobby and Mid Range Production cameras such as the HDR-FX1 in the Light and Motion Housing with wide or super wide lens. With Pro Series lights and battery packs will run in the neighborhood of $20000.00 and an extra charge for luggage every time you fly seeing it weighs in at 64lbs. in its case. Under the old 70lb limit, but over the new 50lb limit! With this camera combination you can control all the camera functions from the housing and capture in 1080i HD beautiful color video in broadcast quality. In addition you must spend a sizable sum on your editing program and computer system.

For about half the amount you can buy a number of HD cameras and L & M Housings. You will have to work these systems a little harder to get some of the same results. But you can if you become good with your equipment and style.

It is a soft transition from top to middle with Ikelite offering very reasonable housings and camera combinations from about $3000.00 to $5000.00 with lights and battery. They weigh less and pack easy. You can get SD to HD in this category that would include the serious hobbyist to the shop or resort Videographer. With SD editing and DVD burning capabilities this kind of system makes sense for 90% of the divers that want to get into U/W Video.

The bottom of the pack is not like U/W cameras in that they don’t make a low end or throw away Video Camera. The only thing you can do here is buy on Ebay or Garage sales used equipment and housings that will except a number of different SD video cameras. Video is very forgiving as a medium for most divers the only thing that has to be learned is technique. Howard Hall and Jim Church have published great books on technique for underwater video. Video can be fun and very rewarding to bring back those images that will impress friends and family. You will get a lot of “You do that?” and “Is that what it looks like down there?” and thanks I needed a good nap! So go forth and video the underwater world you love so much, if a picture is worth a thousand words, then what is a video worth?
