This week lets talk about knowing your equipment. You need to know where your controls are so that when you are faced with that once in a lifetime shot you don’t blow it! In addition you need to know what controls what and what each one does. Here is where digital shines. You can go around the house and yard taking pictures using different setting and if you don’t like you delete. An SLR camera and housing will have more control but not necessarily more buttons, just more control over Shutter and Aperture. You might have seen these on you camera expressed as “A” and “S” we will talk about these features later. For now we need to just become comfortable with the basic controls of Off and On, Focus, and Zoom. And of course the shutter release and not the off button. This was one small problem with the Reef Master D500, the Shutter Release and On button were on top next to each other and in what you would think was backward. Many people got excited and turned the camera off instead of getting the picture! They have reversed the buttons on the new D600 making it more natural to use.

Now that you have the basics down I would suggest you make yourself familiar with the housing as well. Know how to remove all your “O” rings and replace them. As well check each for being cracked or dried out. They should be soft and supple with no cracks or dirt on them. You can put the smaller ones in your mouth and feel for cracks with your tongue as well as you fingers. You want the “O” rings to be clean and dirt free and by putting a small amount of Silicone on your finger and dragging the O-ring through your fingers smoothing the Silicone into the O-ring. One human hair laying across the O-ring is enough to flood your camera.

The other area to think about is the Camera Bucket on the boat. If your camera is going to leak it will here. Use the rinse bucket or tube for that and not for place to store your camera. While traveling to the dive site cameras can bang together and cause damage or flooding. One reason it happens here is the seals do not have pressure on them in the rinse tank or bucket. When you go in with you camera look for bubbles and makes sure your not flooding. As you dive deeper the pressure increase on the housing and actually helps seal the O-rings tighter. So the first 15ft is where you have the most chance of flooding your camera. So you might have a greater chance of flooding you camera while practicing in a pool than on that dive to 60ft on the reef. With this in mind I still feel it is useful to practice with your camera in the pool. It will have you getting better with your buoyancy and camera control when you trust your camera out in front of you and do a nose dive. This is where you can practice your best position with camera at the ready while controlling your position in the water. Now you can check those controls and see if you remember where and what the do under water. Again take as many as you need to get used to what different settings and control will do for you!
