Photo tip of the week!

Film Vs Digital the battle continues! You hear all the time the guys shooting film say “Digital is not true” or “I get better results” and a lot of other arguments thrown in for good measures. Well I have committed to digital for a couple of what I feel are great reasons. First: the amount of pictures you can take underwater. Two: the immediate results that can be viewed for composition without the time to develop film etc. Three: the cost per picture Vs film. And fourth: and maybe the most important is that all pictures in today’s magazines are all digital photos! Even if shot by film they are scanned and made digital, that’s what happens in a modern world of digital everything, it is just the way it is.

So lets say I stay with film and the old fashion darkroom and developing. You have to spend time and money on equipment and papers. Hours in the darkroom to get the best results and then you just have a picture on a piece of paper. So if you want to put it on the web you have to make it digital. So you end up with a digital photo anyway, so why not start with one? Now you decide to pint your pictures on your own printer, well you need to make it digital again. Now you have other problems like the ability of the printer to match the picture you have. The resolution of a 16MG Pixel camera doesn’t matter if your printer can only print at 1200DPI. You need a 2400 DPI or better printer.

What is about to happen in digital photography is the next step to satisfy the film buff by producing a 4 CCD camera that will have Red, Blue, Green, and Cyan! It will have 422 million color possibilities instead of the 17 million with a 3 CCD camera of today. Then there is the size of the CCD the closer you get to the real size of film the more light and information that can be collected. This becomes an even bigger problem in the end because there are no printers that can display the true colors of the 4 CCD camera, so what good is it? The same goes for even a plasma HD TV which produces about 27 million color variations and the LCD which produces about 17 million like your LCD display on your camera. The one on your camera produces this at 72DPI and that is why it looks so good on the camera until you blow it up on a bigger screen.

So for the screen you are looking at this on is around 72DPI in resolution, so why do I need more? When printing a resolution of 300DPI produces one of the best results that the printer is capable. So when you are viewing my photos they are at 72DPI with 17 million color variations on the web. That is why, as I have said before, I keep two files on every picture. One for print 20 to 25MB for a 8.5x11 and one for the web at 100k witch uploads fast and is the about the optimum for web display at 600P horizontal (Pixels) Thumb Nail are at 200P.

So know your tools, it kind of like buying an elephant gun to shot a rabbit! You have to know how you will use the picture. Print it? Display in digital picture frame? On your computer? Shoot for a magazine? In today’s digital world you have a lot of flexibility and changing technology to deal with so buy what you need to accomplish the goals that you set for yourself!
