One of MySpace friends is going on a really cool dive trip and will be shooting Macro. So I am going to talk about Macro and Muck Diving. The very first rule is SLOW down, everything you do has to be in slow motion. For three reasons one: you need to scan for critters by looking everywhere in small areas. Just about the time you think you have covered it all and seen everything you spot the Pipefish or Ringed Octopus. Two: you don’t want to scare away what you’re looking for. Some critters are very light sensitive and react to movement. And last but not least is Backscatter! You don’t want to stir up the muck on the bottom and that is sometimes very hard to do. Sometimes you have to carefully pull yourself along keeping your camera at the ready and not dragging in the sand!

In situations like this you want to position your strobe or strobes to minimize the chance of backscatter. I like to position my strobes close to the end of my flat port at about a 33* to 45* degree pointing at the subject. Don’t forget to turn the strobes to a very low setting to start and add more light as required. For some shots you can even put one under and one over. If you have only one 98% of the time it should go over and still at the 33* to 45* degrees. If you can keep an eye on your subject not stir up the bottom and as always shoot up where you can. You will come back with some great shots!
