Macro is a whole different deal, you need to understand what Macro does, and it’s not a close up. In many instances people think that by getting close they can get a Macro shot. What you have to understand is focal lengths and being under water. You have to know how far away from your subject you have to be for the lens to focus on your subject and many times it is further away than most think. I use Reed’s Rod that’s 18 inches long and if I am using a lens that needs nine inches then I can eyeball the distance using the known length to judge. The best way is to shoot some inanimate objects to test your lens ability to focus at a certain distance.

The other side of the equation is magnification and there is two ways to this mechanically and one-way in your computer. The first is Rings that fit between your camera and the lens that shorten the focal length and make the subject larger. What you give up with these is a short focus field. The bigger the ring and the larger the magnification the shorter the field in witch you can focus. The next thing is does your housing allow for this? If you can swap ports then you probably make it work, but remember you still have to be able on a zoom to have the gears mesh or you will be using whatever MM you set it on when you button up the housing. The option is a “Wet swap” lens system like Light & Motion uses on their Tetra Housing. The other option is a “Wood’s Diopter” that fits over the outside of your existing port. The same principle that Reef Master uses for their Macro lens and their Wide Angel lens, so you have to find out what is available for your system and where you want to go. For instance if you set you camera up for macro and that is what you’re going to shot if you go with a camera that doesn’t allow for underwater swaps or adjustments. I have been under with a macro set up when the big Sea Turtle swims by and it never seems to fail. So you have to decide what will work for you. If you are a pro on assignment, then it doesn’t matter if the turtles swim in formation if your task is to shot Blennies!

Good Luck because the little critters are sometime the toughest ones to shot!
