My recent trip to Roatan Honduras brought back an old adage “It is the simple things” that in this case will sink your ship. Metaphorically speaking of course! We had a couple farley new Underwater Photographer with us and one who was coming along nicely after sitting in on a couple of my classes in the past. He had taken my advice and purchased his second strobe for his camera and everything was coming together for him. One really great dive to the World Famous Mary’s Place was going to be his culmination of what he had practiced in the past four days of diving. He went in with tough conditions and proceeded to take a number of pictures. There were many opportunities for some good pictures. We were back on the boat and he asked me why his camera was telling him that he only had two pictures. I asked him if he had checked his Memory Card and he told me that he had bought three for the trip and he thought it was okay! Upon opening the camera his face dropped as he realized he had not put a card in the camera and had left all three on the other side of the island!

Another Photographer was looking bummed and I asked him what was wrong to be told his battery died 10 minutes into the dive and that his ONE spare was also back at the resort! Yet another had battery troubles with his flash!

Moral of the Story, always have a back up! Weather it be a number of batteries, cards, or even another camera, depending on the need to get the picture, it has to be checked and checked again. It is wise to check before you get on the boat and certainly before you step off into the Blue! No matter how hard it is or how tired you are put the batteries on the charger, check your gear, do your maintenance the night before. Check and check again to make sure your O-rings are clean, your card is loaded, and batteries are in and charged! Then if you don’t get “That Picture” it isn’t because you did something to sabotage YOURSELF! Remember the old saying “An once of prevention is worth a pound of cure”! Take it from someone who has found himself feeling pretty sick form making the simple avoidable mistake!
