What are you willing to invest for your underwater pictures? You have to ask yourself this when looking at your camera that you have now and the one you want or will be getting soon. What do you want to accomplish and what are you willing to pay for it? Are you shooting for yourself, friends, and family or do you want to get published? Do you want to put together slide shows or hang your pictures on the wall?

Well the end game dictates what you will need to spend to get there. If you’re happy shooting for yourself, friends, and Family I suggest an Auto Camera like Sea Life’s Reef Master or the next step up a housed auto like an Olympus, Canon, or Nikon. No one in this category needs more than 8mgps and 6mgps is more than adequate for home use. Each company makes a poly carbonate housing for their camera that can fire a flash through a Hot Shoe or Fiber Optic connection. A friend uses a Canon 730 with an Inon Strobe and gets some great pictures. All these will set you back $1000.00 to $2500.00 depending on number of strobes, Close up lenses, arms, batteries, extras, and trays etc.

If you fall into the second category you will spend $8000.00 to infinity and it never stops, as they become tools of your trade. The number of backups and lens can file a pelican case or more. In this category you really don’t need more than 11mgps buy companies are talking about 40mgps cameras! Why? Were would you use the result? How would you view the results of a camera that’s resolution was greater than the technology in lenses! The point is you can get on the horse and ride it without knowing were you are going except around!

Find a camera that fits you needs and budget and spend your time diving and getting good with it! When you can’t do better then that is when you start looking at better equipment! I have always said cards don’t make divers diving makes divers! And Cameras don’t make Photographers taking pictures makes you a Photographer! Just add water!
