Workflow is the key word of the day. I will tell you that what works for me and if you stop and consider your own you might streamline yours or adopt mine. Her is what I do when I set up for a Photo Shot. I unpack and assemble my camera and that includes inspecting and lubing my O-rings and putting together the proper port and lens combo that I will shoot based on what or where we are going. Establish your work area if you are working on a camera table so that you can lay claim to a part of it that should be yours for the time you are there. This makes the routine easier to establish when you have your gear in one place. Set up your charging station, and I bring my own power strip so that I don’t hog the outlets, and organize your area so that you don’t have to relearn where you put things or spend your time looking for those small or misplaced pieces or tools.

Now you can settle in to your accommodations and unpack the little bit of personal gear you can bring due to the weight limits. So you put away your two T-Shirts, a Pair of Shorts, and your Toiletries! These days all this personal stuff is a luxury! Sad but true and the over weight stuff is Camera gear and you can’t get it lighter so your stuck at the mercy of the Airlines. Use this time to acquaint yourself with your surrounding and what the routine will be.

Now you’re ready to go to work and your not rushed. Make sure your batteries are fresh and all your latches are closed and locked and fire off a test fire. Now you are off the boat and someone is handing down your camera to you that are compact and ready to be handed down. I usually show the deck hand and or the person who will be doing it for you where YOU like the camera to be lifted by or how you want it done. This takes only a minute or two and can save you a lot of trouble and anxiety in the long run.

Now you have your camera and you’re on your way down. I like to adjust my Strobe arms on the way to the reef by pointing the camera at myself and shooting a self-Portrait. Now I can flip the camera around and make sure my exposure is right. I start with my shutter set at 125 and my F-Stop set at 11 and then I go from there. I find this a good starting point and you can go up or down from there.

Stay tuned next week for part two!
