For a small area (like around a single tile), a utility knife will take some effort but will work OK. The plastic tabs are tough and won't be ruined with a few scratches.

For a larger area, you might want to consider getting a dremel-type rotary tool with a 1/8th inch cutting bit.

Both the utility knife and the dremel tool can cut the tabs, but you'll generall know when your hitting the plastic, so just ease-up at that point.
