My father was born in 1937, Jan 10. In Beaufort county, NC.
He was adopted by the Spencer Family when he was a baby. The only birth record of a baby boy in the County birth index on his birthday is for an 18 year old mother, Lilly M Waters, unknown baby boy, with the dad being Burtis Blackman 37, unmarried. (Fairly sure this is a made up name for the father).
I did not know him. When I tried to find him, he had just passed away. He tried to look for me in the 70s but I did not know it at the time.
He and all of his adopted siblings are gone. The few adopted family members I have found know nothing of his adoption other than he found out at 16 and he was upset. No one knows anything. It was a small town but now everyone has passed who may have had information.
Is this a complete dead end for the biological family? Just sent for a DNA ancestry test to hopefully get some clue if the Lilly M Waters is the correct mother.
I do not know when they began closing adoptions in NC. 1937 seems like it was on the line. Any suggestions would be great.
Should I begin court proceeding to open the file or do they just not open them in NC for any reason?
