I went and observed my dad teaching, and seeing him in front of his class stirred something in me and I decided to change my major. The day I went to see him, he was a psychology teacher. His students were observing a plasticized human head and seeing how into it the kids got and how into it my dad was inspiring. My mom was a guidance counselor and I got to see a lot of how she positively impacted kids. I realized being an educator would meet all my needs. Q How would you describe your teaching style? A I don t have a quiet classroom, but its productive noise. It s kids learning. I guess there is some amount of me standing up in front teaching, but mostly my class is student centered. There are a lot of hands-on labs and design-your-own lab activities, instead of me telling them how to use the materials I give them. Q What do you love about teaching? A I love that there is a reward every single day of some sort. I feel like my job is rewarding every day. Even on bad days or when it s not as obvious what the reward is, there is always something that happens during my day, like a kid raises their hand who had never answered a question before. There s always something in every day that makes me feel like I have a purpose, that I changed somebody s life, even if it was just a little bit. I think there is a certain instinct in kids to want to know how the world works and how their bodies work. It s inherently interesting to them. A Well, I think it can help me in a way. I m still more than twice the age of students, but at the same time, I m close enough in age to still remember middle school and remember what kinds of things I liked in teachers and didn t like in teachers.
