Hello, Aviation Buffs!

I'm a freelance writer based in North Hollywood, CA. I'm in the process of adapting a story concerning the fictional crash of a DC-3 between 1940-1950.

I'd really like to lop off the tail but wonder if this ever happened, or is at all possible with such an aircraft. I ask anyone out there to suggest possible mechanical failures that would down such equipment, whether they involve the tail or not.

I'd really appreciate any help. Thank you in advance.
