I was just browsing this site and came across your question of a couple of years ago.
I don't know whether you've gotten any answers in the meantime, but here's the latest I know.
By "Uncle Doug", I assume you mean Doug Fawcett, one of Australia's aviation legends.
Go to http://www.dc3.adastron.com/ozcensus.htm and refer to Note 14 near the bottom of the page. This shows it as c/n 12638, tail #42-108879.
The last I heard, the Chevy-Douglas in good nick, having undergone a major restoration a few years back and travelling the country doing "Charity Bash" rallies and the like.
