Daybreak Sheds New Light on Fort Hawkins Public Program May 1st

This morning's "Daybreak" shed new light on the 2nd Annual Fort Hawkins Archaeology Celebration & Artifact Day slated for this Saturday, May 1st, at the Fort Hawkins Historic Site on Emery Highway in Macon. During the day from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm visitors will not only tour the three story Blockhouse Replica high atop Fort Hill, but also be able to see part of the archaeological dig site that exposed a spectacular part of the original 200 year old fort - a massive brick structure that included two double hearth brick fireplaces. One of those double hearth fireplaces will be seen this Saturday along with the over 2500 piece surface collection of site artifacts - reflecting the rich archeological and historical heritage of this early American frontier fort and the "Birthplace of Macon."

Primitive skills including tossing the primitive but effective atlatl weapon will be enjoyed along with special children's activities such as pottery and necklace making. As the children create and take home a modern artifact, the public is encourage to bring in their own ancient artifacts for identification by the experts with the Society for Georgia Archaeology. That strange stone or curious family curio can now be identified and truly celebrated - at no cost. There is no admission for the day's event sponsored by the Fort Hawkins Commission and the Ocmulgee Archaeological Society.

There will be something for everyone at this celebration that helps kick off Archaeology Month in Georgia with programs scheduled throughout the state throughout the month of May. Fort Hawkins is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a rare American archaeological site. The complete archaeological report revealing a much more significant and substantial Fort Hawkins than ever previously imagined is available on line, along with more information about the Commission's regular fort programs and exciting development plans at www.forthawkins.com. For information about the upcoming public program please call 478-742-3003 or 478-718-3398.
