FHC Friends - The 2nd Annual Fort Hawkins Archaeology Celebration & Artifact ID Day was a tremendous success - blessed with really fine weather (although breezy atop our commanding hill top), blessed with over 100 visitors enjoying the day , and blessed with our co-sponsor, the Ocmulgee Archaeological Society. The event received some good pre-publicity and was nicely covered by WMAZ Ch 13 on both their evening news programs. Stephen & Donna Hammock did an outstanding job in promoting archaeology and offering some great children's activities. The kids made Lizella clay pots and effigies and made "bear claw" necklaces as mementos of their visit to the fort site. Stephen was joined by your former Chairman, Dr. Bob Cramer, and author Lloyd Schroeder in identifying artifacts that came in all day long. OAS President Alan Marsh provided great leadership during the day while Fort Hawkins War of 1812 Commandant, Maj. Phillip Cook, was represented by his many great grandson, Jim Preston, and flint knapper extraordinaire, Dave Swetmon, dazzled everyone with his lively demonstrations and awesome display of real art that primitive skills can create. The fort's double hearth archaeological feature was open for tours along with a mock archaeology demonstration at the dig site. The Fort Hawkins Commission is surely indebted to OAS for this successful educational public program and the following photos will attest to the day's success. Enjoy and be proud! - Marty
