Today's 5th Annual Fort Hawkins Veterans Day Salute was a grand success in so many ways! It was an absolutely gorgeous afternoon and the fort site looked so great. Over 75 visitors attended this year's patriotic event including a WWII Veteran who helped build the Burma Road (and who was recognized) plus the Northeast High School Junior ROTC Color Guard and Cadet Cadre. The Cadets added a new and special look to this year's event, which was certainly our most successful. Sgt. Jackson with the Georgia National Guard's 48th Brigade was there with his son. Fifteen patriotic and veteran groups grandly participated in the Flag Retirement Ceremony and all expressed their thanks for this program and their desire to see it continue. Our punch & cookie reception and tours of the Blockhouse Replica were thoroughly enjoyed and verified by many of our guests during the afternoon before and after the official ceremony. Special thanks to FHC Members Sandra, Judy, Echo, John, Lynn and Mary Lee for their participation today. Many thanks to the Ocmulgee National Monument for the use (free) of their folding chairs, to Sam Mason for his concluding Taps and to James Stallings for his black powder puctuation to Taps. The most thanks most go to the Nathaniel Macon Chapter NSDAR and their Regent Sandra Adams for sponsoring this patriotic community program at Fort Hawkins. They were thanked publically for all they do for Fort Hawkins and you might want to check out my Welcome Address on our website's Message Board to see how exactly they were thanked and how important this event is to Fort Hawkins. Fox 24 News covered the event and Lisa took some grand photos documenting our grand success which I will share with you soon.
