RESIDENTIAL ELEVATORS: SIZES AND CONFIGURATIONS

Residential or Home Elevators are limited by Elevator Code to a maximum size of 15 square feet. (ASME A17.1/CSA-B44 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators Section 5.3-Private Residential Elevators)

Cab sizes generally start at 12 square feet (36x 48) with a hoistway size of roughly 4 x 4 . Smaller sizes are available.

If space is available to accommodate an elevator of 15 square feet, the addition of 33% or 3 square feet is, relatively speaking, a huge increase in size for a relatively small increase in price. (Imagine adding 600 square feet to an 1800 square foot house.)

A 40 x 54 elevator has a shaft size a little larger than 4 x 5. A 36 x 60 elevator requires a space of roughly 4 x 5 .

The configurations of home elevators can either be single entry (enter/exit same side), straight thru (enter/exit opposite sides) or 90 degree (enter/exit at a right angle). For wheelchair use in a 90 degree configuration elevator, the 40x 54 size offers the best maneuverability.
