Sunday, November 27 is the first Sunday of Advent. We as Catholics are called to spend these next four weeks preparing for the coming of Christ. This preparation is extremely important because the celebration of the birth of Christ reminds us that God has such a great love for us that he sent his son to be born as an ordinary baby boy. This tiny baby gives us hope every year that through his birth to his passion on the cross he will win for us the rewards of eternal life. So how can we truly prepare for the savior of mankind? Well here are three steps that we can take this Advent as we journey towards the birth of Jesus.

1: Go to Confession. The Advent seasons is a great time to receive the sacrament of Reconciliation because we must clean out our souls of the sins that take up too much room for Christ to live in us. This should be our top priority because if we have sins or things taking away from letting Christ into our heart, then we are unable to know true joy that Christmas brings. How can we enjoy time with our friends and family if we are weighed down by sin?

2: Spend more time with your family. In today’s world, it is becoming harder and harder to sit down and spend quality time with the ones we love so much. During this advent let us try to make a priority to eat a meal as a family or do an activity together. Spending time with the ones we love shouldn’t just be on Christmas day, but we should strive to do at least one thing as a family every day.

3: Go to Mass. The birth of Christ is also a reminder that Jesus gives us his body, blood, soul, and divinity every day at the sacrifice of the Mass. If you are reading this and struggling to make it to Mass every Sunday or you know a friend or family member that struggles with going to Mass at all, make a conscious effort to make it to Mass at least from Advent through the Christmas season.
