This Sunday marks the fourth and final Sunday in the liturgical season of Advent, which means that next Sunday is one of the biggest feasts in the Church. During this week, it is important for us to reflect on what we have accomplished during this Advent season.

Have we tried to get closer to God or have we just let everything continue on as normal? Do we truly desire for Christ to come and enter our lives, or do we just desire to get by with the bare minimum? These questions are important for each one of us to reflect upon, but there is one more question that we should also consider. The question is this: since Advent means “waiting for a notable person,” who are we waiting for during this Advent? This question is interesting because we aren’t waiting for the birth of Christ, that has already happened. So if we are waiting for a notable person to come, but it isn’t the coming of the birth of Christ, who could it be? The answer to this is surprisingly simple; we are still waiting for Christ, but instead of his birth we are waiting for his return at the end of time.

So while the celebration of Christ’s birth is almost upon us let us try to remember that this time, we are waiting for the second coming where we will be able to see Christ in all his glory bringing his kingdom here on Earth. So let us never forget the words we say when we proclaim the mystery of our faith at every mass, which is: “we proclaim your death, oh Lord, until you come again.” So, as Advent draws to an end, let us not forget that Christ will come again in the future and we must always be prepared to welcome him when he comes again.
