Could someone help me understand what Paul meant when he said that "they are not all Israel who are descended from Israel" (Romans 9:6) and "all Israel will be saved" (Romans 11:26)? Thanks.

Romans 9:6
Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel:

The Spiritual meaning always comes first
(John 6:63-words of God are spirit / 1 Cor 2:14 - to spiritual discern)
, whether or not someone properly interpreted as such, that is another matter.

In the scripture of Romans 9:6 you can look and see the key to begin an understanding. Look at "...the word of God...". This scripture is in reference to the word of God.

Then look at Romans 9:8, it says:

Romans 9:8
That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed.

Romans 9:8 refers to what it is not: "...the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God:..."

Then it refers to what it is; "...but the children of the promise are counted for the seed."

What Paul is saying is that only those who repent and listen to and follow the commandments of the Lord, will be counted as the seed. This is his "promise"

In Romans 11:26, it refers to God recovering or returning his people to him. This is also shown in:

Isaiah 11:11
And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall set his hand again the second time to recover the remnant of his people, which shall be left, from Assyria, and from Egypt, and from Pathros, and from Cush, and from Elam, and from Shinar, and from Hamath, and from the islands of the sea.

"All Israel" is the "remnant" in
Romans 11:26

So when Derek McCammon mentioned that it refers to the remnant, he was correct but only as such in the reference to the word "remnant". His reply did not speak of God's promise, it only spoke of temporal (flesh) lineage, which means nothing when it comes to salvation. To base God's salvation of his remnant only on temporal lineage fails to account for faithfulness, obedience and repentance (to name a few).

Never forget, that Christ said in "...the flesh profiteth nothing...". Place what Christ said into proper context within that scripture.

"...The words I speak unto you, they are spirit and they are life."

Then bring it into context of what Christ spoke about the flesh:

"...the flesh profiteth nothing: the words..."

Look closely, it will show you that the words Christ speaks, are in a spiritual context and meaning, that any context and meaning that is in a "flesh" (temporal) context are not his words, because such a "flesh" context profits nothing.

The true spiritual meanings of the scriptures are much more expansive than people can understand. After all, God's word is eternal and eternal also refers to "unlimited".

Those who stick to "flesh" interpretations will be, as
the words of the Lord Thy God, "...the children of the flesh...", will not make it.

Seek the Spirit of the Lord, "John Moneypenny", to teach you...and use the King James Version. Too many other versions edited the Bible in such a way to loose the Spiritual meaning of God's word.

I say this in the name of Jesus Christ
Amen

Mark
