I just recently received my Bullinger Companion Bible and have been studying it as best as I understand what he is trying to say. What Mr Bullinger says about the commission Jesus gave the apostles in Matthew 28:19 makes little sense. Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is what he states.
The commission to go to "all nations" has been POSTPONED until Christ returns in glory and establishes his earthly kingdom. In other words the commision of Matt 28:19 had nothing to do with the 12 apostles, but is for a FUTURE time that has not occured. Then this commission is to be heralded to all the "nations". This is what I believe he is saying in a nutshell.
The reason why this doesn't make sense to me is, is why would he tell his apostles AT THAT TIME about this commission if they were not even going to be alive to carry this commission out? What relevance would this commission have for the 12 apostles at the time Jesus said this TO THEM. Remember our Lord said "Go ye". This surely seems to me that our Lord was directing this commission to the 12 apostles THEN present. So how could the Lord have had in mind a FUTURE commission thousands of years later? This is my question.Thank you. |
