Hi Brent,

Great question. I'm sure we agree that there are no contradictions in the Word of God. So how are to account for this SEEMING contradiction?

To borrow a phrase from C. Welch, the verses you quoted are "two sides of the same coin". In other words, both are true because as James wrote in James 2, faith without works is dead. In other words, you can't say you have faith and your works show that you do not. Works complete faith.

In fact we have in Phil. the same SEEMING contradiction as you pointed out in Romands. Note Phil. 1:6 where Paul was "confident of this very thing, that He which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ". But in Ph. 2:12 he wrote, "work out your own salvation with fear and trembling".

It SEEMS like a contradiction to say in one verse that he is confident and in another that they should work out the same thing. If it were up to them/us no one would be saved. It is, "two sides of the same coin".

As for Luke 1:6, this confusion is due to the fact that the Greek word translated "righteous" is misunderstood. It means "correct", not "saved". For the Scriptural evidence of that statement may I point you to my web-site (www.rightwordtruth.com) and the paper in the section on salvation called "A Study Of Misunderstood Words In God's Plan Of Salvation" (or something like that.

In Christ,

Joyce
