All other factors being equal, the only minimum age that I would consider appropriate for bunion surgery would be that age at which the relevant bones in the foot reach their full growth and the growth centers close. This generally occurs in females in their middle to later teens and in males in their later teens or slightly later. Until that time, it is possible that the efficacy of any correction may be mitigated by continued bone growth, and depending on the procedure, operation on a foot with active growth centers may pose a risk of damage to those centers. The over-riding question, though, is whether your pain is a result of your bunions or if the bunions are an incidental finding. There is no way that I can answer that question for you, but if your growth has been normal and your hypophyseal centers are closed, I see no particular reason why any foot surgeon would say that you are too young for a bunion correction. |
